The Basics section of the Academy is designed to introduce community microgrids: what they are, why they are valuable, and how they work.

  • What is a Microgrid: Provides a basic definition and reviews various types and configurations of microgrids.
  • Benefits: Reviews four key microgrid benefits: power reliability, economic advantages, grid resilience and environmental improvement.
  • Key Components: Defines the five key components of a successful microgrid: loads, power generation assets, energy storage, advanced controls and point of common coupling.
  • Technologies: Introduces specific generation, storage and control systems for microgrids.

Microgrids.io is an information resource for planning and developing local government microgrids. Microgrids.io is currently maintained and updated by the Center for Building Knowledge at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
