HomeAboutAbout the Research Project

This section of Microgrids.io presents the results of a multi-year research project that explored the range of critical challenges currently facing the successful procurement and financing of local government microgrids. The project was undertaken by the N.J. Board of Public Utilities with financial support from the United States Department of Energy.

The project resulted in a comprehensive Final Report, together with a series of short Fact Sheets and accompanying Webinars focused on eight key categories of challenges impacting the development of successful local government microgrids. The Fact Sheet/Webinar topics include the following:

  • Current Status & Challenges
  • Procurement Challenges
  • Financing Challenges
  • Public Policy Challenges
  • EDC Challenges
  • Technology Challenges
  • Other Challenges
  • Moving Beyond the Challenges

The project also developed a comprehensive collection of Resources, organized into a series of 15 issues relevant to the development of local government microgrids: DER, Financing, Market, Ownership, Planning, Policy, Procurement, Rulemaking, Services, Software, State Programs, Technology, Type, Use Case, and Utility.

Microgrids.io is an information resource for planning and developing local government microgrids. Microgrids.io is currently maintained and updated by the Center for Building Knowledge at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
